This tour takes you on a whirlwind experience of Holland. You will visit some of the quaint antique villages that dot the COUNTRYSIDE OF HOLLAND and get a chance to see for yourself some of the landmarks that helped define Dutch history. After a stopover at Monnickendam, you will be taken to Edam’s historic floating cellar, Volendam, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Beemster, and Zaanse Schans. On Day 2, you will get a chance to explore the medieval cities of Delft, The Hague, and Madurodam.
On the first day of your tour, you will be picked up at your hotel in Amsterdam. You will then be driven to the historic villages of Amsterdam North: Durgerdam, Ransdorp, Zunderdorp, Broekin Waterland.
Each village has a unique history and played an important role in Amsterdam’s rise to prominence during the Golden Age and after. In Monnickendam, you will get to see the port where many of the Netherlands warships were built during the Anglo-Dutch Wars. On your next stop in Edamyou will see Edam’s oldest brick house built around 1530. It still in its original condition, down to the floating cellar (“drijvende kelder”) said to have been built by a sea captain who missed the sea. After a quick tour of Volendam, you will get a break for lunch. Next, you will be driven to Beemster, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town is home to the first polder ever built in the Netherlands, with water extracted out of the lake by windmills. To learn more about traditional Dutch windmills, you will then be taken to the Zaanse Schans which was once a windmill village of over 700 windmills, only five of which remain. During this tour you may have the possibility to visit one and take a look inside. You will spend the night in the capital of North Holland, Haarlemand the historic center of the tulip bulb-growing industry.
You will start off the second day of your tour with a visit to the city of Delft, the birthplace of the Dutch Master Johannes Vermeer and the famous Delft Pottery.
Next, you will be shown the sites of the bustling city of The Hague that combines modern skyscrapers with classical Golden Age Dutch architecture. The last stop of the tour will be Madurodam, an interactive miniature park that depicts all aspects of Dutch society from 17th century deckhands, to modern KLM stewardesses. After the tour, you will be driven back to Amsterdam.
